Update | 12:34 p.m. A key House committee voted on Thursday to regulate, for the first time, trading in the arcane financial instruments known as derivatives, which have been linked to the financial crisis that shocked Wall Street and cut into the savings of millions of Americans, The New York Times’s Stephen Labaton reports from Washington.The 43-to-26 vote by the Financial Services Committee was mostly along party lines and was a big step in President Obama’s proposed overhaul of rules covering the nation’s financial system.

Stocks are lower after Goldman Sachs, Citigroup earnings disappoint Investors turned cautious Thursday after earnings reports from Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Citigroup Inc. stirred worries about the troubles banks still face. Stocks fell moderately in early trading after rallying Wednesday. Investors drew some comfort from a government report that the number of newly laid-off workers filing claims for unemployment insurance fell last week. A report on manufacturing in the New York region also topped expectations.

MSNBC is reporting that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was hospitalized after she fell out of her seat in an airplane before takeoff. “Extreme drowsiness” from a combination of prescription sleeping pills and OTC cold medicine was blamed. UPDATE: Reports say that Ginsburg was kept overnight and released this morning.

So I have a nasty little secret…okay not really nasty and not really secret but I LOVE ‘Glee’. I can’t help myself. Normally I don’t watch comedies and tend to reserve tv time to things more like Fringe, Lost and Flashforward, but Glee is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows. Maybe it has something to do with the amazing music. I am a sucker for a good musical. Too many times I have cleaned the house with the soundtrack of Wicked, Rent, Phantom Of The Opera or Hairspray turned way too loud.

Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase’s chief executive, warned Wednesday that if the government required all over-the-counter derivatives to be cleared on an exchange, as the Obama administration has proposed, this would have a “material impact” on the bank’s future earnings. The question about how to police derivatives is one of the “two main regulatory issues” that the bank is facing, along with the White House’s push to create a consumer protection agency, Mr. Dimon said on a conference call with analysts and investors.
